The Best Treatment for Sciatica Pain

Sciatica pain is primarily caused by pressure and inflammation on the nerve root.  There are several forms of treatment for sciatica pain that can relieve these factors. Most treatments are relatively easy and do not require invasive procedures. One of the most common forms of treatment for sciatica is the use of painkillers. These are usually non-steroid anti-inflammatory muscle relaxers. You can many times alleviate sciatica pain by strengthening the back and leg muscles that are associated with the sciatica nerve. Usually the best treatment is changing certain habits that can help cause sciatica symptoms in the first place.

Many times a simple change in posture is the only treatment for sciatica pain needed. Bad posture can be the cause of extra stress on the spine causing muscles to irritate the sciatica nerve.  By not slouching when you sit or sitting to far back or too straight you may be able to relieve the extra stress which can be an effective treatment for sciatica symptoms. The human head can weigh about 15 pounds and if it is not properly supported by your neck can cause extra strain on your muscles and spine. Be sure your chair provides proper back support and try to take breaks every thirty to sixty minutes in order to ensure you are not sitting too long.

Take time to observe how you stand, make sure you are not pushing your pelvis forward or backward. Be sure not to let your shoulders hang forward. The way you stand can have a great affect on your sciatica nerve. Proper posture can be an excellent treatment for sciatica problems. Try to avoid standing for prolonged periods; this can also help avoid common sciatica problems. Always try to be sure you are standing straight with your feet slightly apart.  If you are not sure about how straight you are standing pay attention to your shoulders. Are your shoulders aligned with your ears and is your chin parallel to the ground? If so you are standing straight and if not you may need to work on this.

Even when you sleep posture is important. Lying with your back propped up by piles of pillows is not good for your back. Sleeping on your stomach is also not good for your back. By laying a pillow beneath your knees while you sleep on your back you can help keep your spine in proper alignment. A pillow between your knees when you sleep on your side will also help. Be sure your pillow keeps your head straight and does not allow it to sag or tilt too far up. You pillow should also be giving your neck good support while you sleep on your back.

A natural treatment should always begin with good posture. Good posture along with proper exercise is all you need many times to solve sciatica pain. Strengthening your muscles to avoid compression on your sciatica nerve can be an important treatment for sciatica and may help avoid the symptoms altogether.
